fglrx problem, Visual Effects not working

Hi, I have Ubuntu Jaunty with VGA card ATI Radeon 2600 XT. Everytime I install fglrx Catalyst Control Center, it won't boot the next time until I disable GDM on /etc/init.d . Is there any workaround with this or fglrx is not compatible with my VGA? By the way, can I somehow enable the Visual Effects (at least normal, not None) despite fglrx is not compatible with my VGA? Thanks.

there is a very serious bug in the NEW ATI Catalyst driver , have you tried installing a OLD ati driver ?

I wish I could, however I don't know how. Could you tell me how to install the old driver? Thanks.
