I am having trouble setting up my Maxtor external usb hard drive.

I am using Gentoo Linux, with kernel 2.6.3-gentoo-r1 using devfs.

I beleive all the nessicary modules are loaded, and the approriate modules/subsystems ie, usb-storage and scsi support.

Klogd picks up the attachment of the new device.

sysfs also picks up on the new device and has the appropriate information.

When I look in /dev for a device file to represent the external hard drive I see nil. When in look in /dev/scsi I see no device file to represent this device. I can't successfully mount the device without a device file.

If nessicary I can post more information.

Anyone know the problem?

Your hd will be a scsi device, like /dev/sda, sdb.

I know what my hard disk device would be. But to tell you the good news, the issue has been resolved.

While configuring my kernel and choosing usb-massstorage I assumed as it would automatically support scsi disks. Seeing that in the help portion it mentioned hard disked. There seemed to be a dependency error.?!??!?!?!?!
