Ethernet not detected: Debian Lenny on Dell Latitude D600 laptop

Ethernet is not detected with the following setup:

OS: Debian Lenny
Laptop: Dell Latitude D600
Ethernet adapter: Broadcom 57xx Gigabit Integrated Controller
Wifi adapter: Broadcom BCM4309 802.11a/b/g

Have done the following troubleshooting suggestions from around the www:

LAN controller is enabled in BIOS
dmesg | grep eth0 returns nothing
lspci -v | grep -i net shows wifi adapter but no ethernet adapter
ifconfig -a does not show eth0
ifconfig eth0 up confirms ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Have done lsmod, but not sure what I should be looking for.

I would post lspci, dmesg or any other output, but as the adapter is not being detected, I have no network/internet connection from that laptop, have only one other Windows based (at this stage) laptop that I am using to write this message, and so would have to type out the output manually.

Adapter indicators are both on when laptop is powered up. Am unsure if the ethernet adapter has somehow gone to sleep, and if so, unsure how to wake it.

Perhaps the ethernet adapter is defective, but am hoping to confirm this before looking for a workaround/replacement.

Thanks in advance.

Can you show your lsmod output?

I could but it runs at about 60 lines, so again, would have to manually type it.

Is there any specific module names I should be looking for? This may cut it down and I could type these out.

Why do you have to manually type it? A whole dmesg output would be nice....

I mentioned in my original message:

"I would post lspci, dmesg or any other output, but as the adapter is not being detected, I have no network/internet connection from that laptop, have only one other Windows based (at this stage) laptop that I am using to write this message, and so would have to type out the output manually."

Fairly new to Linux so haven't used/mounted a usb stick before, but will try to find out how and give it a go so I can maybe transfer the output to my Windows laptop and upload it here.

Is there any way that you suggest I could capture this output and transfer it to my other laptop from which I am sending this message?

Pretty much what you just said man... Plug up a USB flash drive and copy the output over...

Did you enable non-free drivers in repo?

If you mean adding "non-free" to /etc/apt/sources.list, yes this has been done.

They're available through synaptic, but if you have no network you may have to download the package and install manually.
Did you have network with installation disk? Using livecd you can possibly install.

I'm actually on squeeze machine so I know it's available in squeeze.

I would have thought that even without any necessary driver(s), Debian would still at least detect or recognize any network controller physically present, and that installing a driver simply enables the OS to control/communicate with the controller. Or is installing the necessary driver(s) required for the OS to actually detect the controller?

It's non-free so if you didn't do Advanced Options>>Expert Install it won't install. And you would prbably have to run a command to have it installed. Take a look at this it's simi-related.
