Question Ethernet Configuration

Hello everybody!!! I've jsut installed Linux red hat 8.1 and although Kudzu (i hope i spelled it right i'm saying this because i'm from Greece) found all hardware including my usb cable modem and my ethernet pci card it cannot activate the ethernet card...On the other hand i ran as well Windows xp as an alternative system using linux boot logger. So the problem is that when i check from the cmd box of XP ipconfig /all it gives ip adress which is static for the ethernet, there is no value of default gateway. The reason for posting this message is beause the ethernet card (pci) is used to provide internet to my roomate's PC which runs Windows 2000 when i'm logged on Linux. I don't know whether i have to put those values of the ethernet card to linux ehternet dialog box for static determination of ip address... or if there is an alternative solution

Thanks for reading

what kind of connection do you use? Do you use static IP or was it assigned to you?

The Connection is DSL 500 and the cable modem is USB connected to the Pc. The ethernet is connected to PCI...Ip address for the cable modem is provided by DHCP automatically Thanks for the reply!!!!

i'm a bit lost trying to sork out your system. so you have 2k/redhat dualbooting and connecting to both a usb modem and an internal ethernet interface to provide net access to the internal windows machine. yes?

but the linux ethernet interface is not coming up? what have you done to configure this card? afaik redhat now has a command like redhat-config-network or something which you can use to bring that interface up on a static IP address (as it's internal and you presuambly don't need any dynamic junk on a simple network).

i'd say just set the linux box to 192.168.0.1 and windows to 192.168.0.2. you don't say how you currently assign the IP address tho the internal windows machine though.

aaaaaa now i see what you mean! right...Let's start from the internet side...In Windows the usb cable modem takes IP address directly from DHCP automatically dynamic...the same goes for Linux. The problem is that the ethernet card which is PCI connected gives an IP address (192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0) in windows and by this way this Pc is a kind of server for the other to connect. The problem is that although in Linux both PCI Ethernet and USB Cable modem are active but when i click on system tools--->Network it gives back a prompt saying that there is something wrong in the alias modules.conf...However in linux internet works perfect but there is no LAN and i don't know what's wrong...

i don't know what you're referring to with the system tools (windows, gnome..? nevermind..)

so. what does /etc/modules.conf say (no idea what could be wrong there....)

and have you set up and connection sharing under linux? personally i suggest using an app called Firestarter to enable a firewall and conenction sharing for the internal machine.

i have a cable modem usb connected for main ineternet connection and an ethernet card to communicate to another PC. Everytime i open from Linux the network preferences it guves a message saying :

''eth0 has an alias to module CDC in modules.conf, instead of currently loaded module CDC Ethernet Class!''

What message is that? is this the reason for not having the other pc internet? What solutions are available?
