ESS1869 sound chip: worked with kernel 2.4 but not 2.6

I got the ESS1869 sound device working with the snd-es18xx module using kernel 2.4.33.3 but I can't get it to work properly with 2.6.17.13 kernel. The most I can get out of it is some really crummy-sounding audio, which is better than nothing, but the old kernel did better.

In /etc/modprobe.d/sound:
options snd-es18xx irq=5 port=0x220

with the old kernel, the line:
options snd-es18xx isapnp=0 irq=5 io=0x220
works fine, but doesn't work at all with the 2.6 kernel: I get the message: "unrecognized parameter: io"
