error mounting external usb hdd

Hi sorry if this is a stupid question have only started playing with linux in the last few weeks

I am running Fedora core 4

If i attach my Freecomm USB HDD to my server after it has booted it automounts and works fine, if I restart or shutdown and the power up it dosent auto mount unless i unplug the USB HDD and plug it in again.

also it wont mount manually.

when it is mounted the line in the fstab reads

/dev/sda /media/usbdisk ext3 pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

this is really frustraiting because i know that changing the fstab will have no effect because the fstab stuff loads at boot before the usb modules.

can anyone help please???

/dev/sda /media/usbdisk ext3 pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

Are you sure it reads like that or does it read;

/dev/sda1 /media/usbdisk ext3 pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

Anyway you can edit /etc/fstab and "fix" the problems, for example;

/dev/sda1 /media/usbdisk auto exec,noauto,users,rw 0 0

it does redad as sda1 not sda soz

if i edit the fstab it will crash the system because the usb modules are not loaded prior to fstab running

the main problem i need to resolve is getting the drive to be detected at boot

if i boot the server and run fdisk -l it dosent show up if i unplug the device and plug it back in it does and i can then mount it.

I have a SuSE box here with a external USB disk. Altought the distributions are different, the following may be help.

Try this fstab entry:

/dev/sda1 /media/usbdisk subfs auto,rw,fs=ext3 0 0

The submount is started later, hopefull after the usb system, so this may work. Work for me.

Thanks

I think that sorted it it now shows up after boot when i do fdisk -l

and i can mount it by using

mount /media/usbdisk

now all I have to do is add

mount /media/usbdisk

to the rc.local file and i think it will be fine.

thanks marozsas

thanks all
