Edit modules.conf for sound, RH 8.0

I have a es 1869 sound chip or something and running Red Hat 8.0. I can use modprobe sb and get sound within a session. So far I have only tested playing CDs. Anyway, - what is it I have to add to modules.conf to load the module at startup? The man modules.conf gives me a lot of options, but I do not understand what to add in my case.

Usually in that file you have # marks in front of the listed modules, just delete that # mark and it should load upon reboot or bootup everytime there after. Or you could add something like:

/sbin/modprobe sb

In your rc.local file so its loaded at bootup everytime..

OK, I will try modprobe in rc.local, but i do not have any commented lines in modules.conf. I tought it had to be som alias sound-something in there.

Not sure if this is RedHat specific or not. In the past though I've made changes to /etc/modules.conf and NOT had them take effect after a boot. I realized after a kernel RPM upgrade though they did automatically take effect. I figured out that if I made a change I could build a new initial RAM disk with "mkinitrd" for the current kernel version and it would cause modules changes to show up automatically after reboot. There might be a better/easier way but this works easily enough...

Just type "mkinitrd" for sample usage options. Make a new initrd image with a different name than the current one and then replace the current one with this one. Probably you should re-run /sbin/lilo at this point *if* LILO is your boot manager.

It looks like I have more problems than just the editing of modules.conf here. There is only sound in Gnome and not in KDE and Mozilla for instance will start to play sound if it is on a page an then continue with the same sound until reboot. It looks lie it must be more to it than just a modprobe sb.

I will of course try the last suggested trick as well.
