DVD drive problem

Hi, i'm running Mandrake 9.2 and haven't had any serious problems until right now. My dvd drive has been working fine. I can watch movie with it under xine. however, today, for no reason I can come up with, xine dropped dvd support for the drive. which was wierd. I had burned 3 new copies of the Mandrake 9.2 iso's today to install some things off them. The dvd drive (which is the primary drive on hdc) won't read from the iso disks. although sometimes it will, sometimes it just gets stuck. by that i mean the drive physically won't open after I try to use to package installer. i have to logout and log back in to free it up. But... if i open the same iso in the mounted dvd folder, I can access the dvd drive just fine. If I reboot the machine with the iso's in the dvd drive, it won't read them either.

So I CAN browse cd's and dvd's from the mnt/dvd folder, but xine isn't recognizing /dev/dvd (the link to hdc). I can access information from the mnt folder, but I can't even get it to boot from the iso's.

Does this sound familiar to anybody. I'm really concerned about it. I don't want to have to do a clean install AGAIN! i've come so far this time. what would cause the package manager to flip out like that. is it the way i burned the iso? I used K3b, and selected iso. why would xine not be able to see dvd:/?

any comments would be a big help. thanks.

Are you unmounting the drive before you try to get the tray open?

XINE and Mplayer reads dvds from /dev/dvd. Check /dev/dvd to see if its pointing to the DVD drive. If its there and its not pointing to the right device, remove it and make a new one. Making an symbolic should work. You can always go into xine config file and edit what device is dvd. Also you may want to remove supermount for your DVD drive and set it so users can mount and umount it.
