doing away with linux swap partition?

Im building a new computer in a week or two, and I am wondering...

I am starting off with 2gb of ram, and I was wondering if the linux swap partition can be removed and everything handle in the physical ram?

and, would this add a lot of performance?

i know the swap space can slow the system down, but not neccesarily sure by how much.

Thanks, Martin

Adding swap space won't slow a system down. Needing it but not having it will cause you to grind to a halt.

Sacrifice that 512M of hd space and worry no more about it.

With 2gb of memory you probably would never use swap. I don't think my machine has ever touched swap, and I have 2gb. So technically you could probably get rid of it but since linux will try to use ram first; you probably won't see any performance gains.
So unless disk space is at a premium it's not really not worth the trouble.

It won't cause any slowdowns having it and removing it won't gain you any performance and if you do need the space you'll be happy you had it, as otchie1 said just put a 512M partition or whatever and don't worry about it.
