do you know of a terminal based keyboard test utility

I have a netbook which apparently has a couple of dead keys.

Does anyone knows of a simple utility that will report all the keystrokes so I can work out if it is hardware or not?

All I have been able to find is xev. But that doesn't seem to report every keystroke as some keys that DO work give no response.

Solved... http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Extra_Keyboard_Keys

Using showkey

The universal way to know if a key has a keycode is to use the kernel showkey program. showkey waits for a key to be pressed and if none is during 10 seconds it quits, note that this is the only way to exit the program. To execute showkey you need to be in a real console, it means not in a graphical environment so switch using Ctrl+Alt+F1.
I didn't know about the real console bit

try out Xbindkeys
http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_multimedia_keyboard

The command xbindkeys -mk will show the keycodes when you hit a key.
