dma operation not permitted on ST340014A

hi all, iv got a 40GB hdd....by doing hdparm -d1 /dev/hda..im not able to turn on the dma settings and that is afecting the performance of my linux box...

# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 3 (32-bit w/sync)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 0 (off)
keepsettings = 1 (on)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 16383/255/63, sectors = 40020664320, start = 0

i was able to increase the buffered disk reads fro a pathetic 1Mb/sec to 3 Mb/sec...by switching on unmaskirq n etc, but dma is not happening.....

#hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)

plz advise..its frustating working in such slow speeds

Regards,
Danish

What kernel version are you running? I believe the later 2.6.x kernels fully supports the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset.

Question Loosing Ticks with D101Ggc

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue with the same motherboard, kernel 2.6.16 using RHES4. Using the same kernel on other hardware without a problem.

Does anyone know if there's a bios setting or something that's doing this??/

Regards
Peter Larsen
