/dev/dsp not found using alsa in kernel

okay i recently took a crack at gentoo and after configuring my kernel and getting kde up and running im prompted with an error saying that /dev/dsp cannot be found and alsa will continue using the null output device. i followed this howto on getting my sound working on my laptop (http://tinyurl.com/2vx95f). and it does not seem to work.

I'm using an hp pavillion zv6000 with the ati ixp controller as shown in the output of lspci:

00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

when i look at the output of dmesg i find these lines:

ATIIXP: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:14.1
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:14.1[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
ATIIXP: chipset revision 0
ATIIXP: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0x8410-0x8417, BIOS settings: hdaMA, hdbio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0x8418-0x841f, BIOS settings: hdcMA, hddio

and then farther down the output:

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14 (Thu May 31 09:03:25 2007 UTC).
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found.

and even farther down:

snd_atiixp_modem: version magic '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 mod_unload ' should be '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 SMP mod_unload '

im not sure what this last error is or how to fix it. i'm not sure if i should scratch the idea of using alsa in kernel and go with the alsa-driver in portage. is this a good idea? if anyone needs any other information feel free to ask and any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hya,

How does lshw look like?

Did you alsaconf? If so, any suspicious messages?

Happy Penguin!

is the problem with your penguin.

Make sure that you have ATI IXP AC97 (I guess this is the one you need) is complied in kernel or as a module.

Then see what happens.

Happy Penguins!

Hya,

Ok, one step ahead.

What happens if you load these modules by modprobe? Any message? Check also syslog, dmesg....

Also, read your kernel document under sound/alsa

Happy Penguins!

okay here are the modprobes of the two modules and their error messages:

# modprobe snd-atiixp
WARNING: Error inserting ac97_bus (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/ac97_bus.ko): Invalid module format
WARNING: Error inserting snd_ac97_codec (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/pci/ac97/snd-ac97-codec.ko): Invalid module format
FATAL: Error inserting snd_atiixp (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/pci/snd-atiixp.ko): Invalid module format

# modprobe snd-atiixp-modem
WARNING: Error inserting ac97_bus (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/ac97_bus.ko): Invalid module format
WARNING: Error inserting snd_ac97_codec (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/pci/ac97/snd-ac97-codec.ko): Invalid module format
FATAL: Error inserting snd_atiixp_modem (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/pci/snd-atiixp-modem.ko): Invalid module format

in dmesg alsa still complains that there are no soundcards found and for the two modules the only mentions are this:

snd_ac97_codec: version magic '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 mod_unload ' should be '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 SMP mod_unload '
snd_atiixp_modem: version magic '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 mod_unload ' should be '2.6.22-gentoo-r5 SMP mod_unload '

do you need all the output of dmesg as it is quite long?

as for syslog i do now know how to view the log but i do know it starts at boot. for the documention i was not able to find anything that will help my situation.

Hya,

Another one step ahead.

Another clue.

Did you compile your modules and kernel? Something is wrong with modules.

If you compiled your kernel and modules, do again, make clean -> make ......
If not, find correct ones somewhere.

Anyway, straighten out the problem, so that you do not see "FATAL: Error inserting snd_atiixp"

In this situation, Documentation/sound/alsa is not quite helpful, (you are not that stage yet..)

dmsg is not necessary, neither syslog (FYI /var/log/syslog is usually default for syslog, just cat it.)

You have just another step to solve your problem

Happy Penguins!
