Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card not working on Debian Buster

I'm trying to install Skolelinux on a bunch of (pretty) old laptops. It's hit and miss in regard to how well it works for the wifi cards and this one is driving me crazy.

It's a Dell Latitude D630 and Skolelinux is using the current Debian Buster version (or close to it and I updated to the most recent stable version)

Here's the (relevant?) part of lspci -vvnn identifying the wifi card.

Code:

If you need more, tell me.

I expected some trouble because of its age but I spent a lot of hours on it now and I'm not able to recount in detail everything I tried.

iwconfig shows no wireless device but curiously the bluetooth worked plug and play (which I don't want to work and disabled via 'systemctl disable bluetooth.service' and nobody tell me I'm dumb and this is the problem because it was no problem on two other laptops)
Also, I'm 99% sure it worked before with Windows so I don't think the card is broken.

I assume it's (just) a driver issue but I fail to get one to work. I've installed firmware-linux-nonfree and broadcom-sta-common and because somewhere there was a recommendation to use the b43 module I tried that but apparently it didn't work either.

(Also, not to put two issues in one thread but I also tried both firmware-b43-installer and firmware-b43legacy-installer. But both give me a weird error about not being able to resolve their proxy-url which just genuinely confuses me, although I don't know if installing either would fix the problem)

I'll go to bed now but I'll check back tomorrow and I'd be very happy about any advice.

Code:
 Broadcom Limited BCM4311
Googles hit for Buster

https://packages.debian.org/buster/broadcom-sta-dkms
https://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx

I use AntiX on old and new gear so I look at also

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/networking/broadcom-wireless/

Then move over here:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=143081

and notice wl driver is preffered now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW0f3NOjWys

Why I use AntiX in your situation

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...0/#post6059724

Edit: instead of blacklisting your previous attempts from loading. Causing conflicts. I would go with fresh install of Skolelinux and start over .

Kato86,

Welcome to LQ forums.

Did you see this LQ "sticky" about Broadcom?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW0f3NOjWys

You may also like to have a look at this video about installing Broadcom wifi drivers in Debian:

Thanks for the advice.
I've already tried broadcom-sta-dkms and wl but I haven't come across AntiX before.
I'll try that and check out the videos when I have a chance again and report back!

Sorry, it took me a while to get back to this.

Sadly I didn't make any progress. I'm not sure if it was intentional but you linked the same video three times and it basically deals with the most basic steps I'd already tried three times before asking here (yeah, I'm that kind of person)

I've made a fresh install and tried it again anyways, but no luck.

At this point I'm almost tempted to go back and install Windows just to see if it's maybe a hardware issue after all but I'd rather not if you have any other suggestions.

Just in case it might be relevant, I'll put the error I get when trying to install firmware-b43-installer in case someone has an idea on that.

Code:
No chroot environment found. Starting normal installation

/var/lib/dpkg/info/firmware-b43-installer.postinst: Some problem occurred during the firmware download. Please check your internet connection.

Okay, sorry for not giving up on this but at this point I'm just angry at this laptop.

So, paying some closer attention to the lspci -vv (see above) the wl is there, kind of, but it's not used. After some searching I got to

Code:
root@am-00217096b401:~# dmesg | grep wl
[ 15.471583] wl: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[ 15.471589] wl: module license 'MIXED/Proprietary' taints kernel.
[ 15.479175] wl: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel
[ 15.540763] wl driver 6.30.223.271 (r587334) failed with code 21
[ 15.540765] ERROR @wl_cfg80211_detach :
[ 15.540767] NULL ndev->ieee80211ptr, unable to deref wl
which if I understand correctly means wl is there but not working properly because it taints the kernel? Which I found some info on but none that helps me fix it.

Hopefully this is of use to somebody.

Kato86,

As rokytnji has suggested it is probably best to start with a fresh installation of Skolelinux and follow the instructions in Neon Cipher's video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW0f3NOjWys

I am attaching a text document with all the video's terminal commands to install the wl driver.

Okay, no offense but I did basically this more than once before coming here.
I did it again, after the video /advice was posted the first time.
I now did it again, following the instructions to a t, including trying to install packages I knew were already installed.
It doesn't work.

Would you please believe me I'm not trying to make this hard on you but it really doesn't work with the basic procedure?

I haven't done anything else with the fresh install yet (except a minor fix in /etc/default/grub because otherwise booting takes three minutes) and I won't try anything because I think I've exhausted my options.

Kato86,

I am sorry to hear that this is becoming a real pain.

Could you try using antiX instead of Skolelinux and see if that works on just one machine?

OK.
A quick search for debian BCM4311.
The first result looks very important and hasn't been mentioned yet afaics.
Searching the string "BCM4311" inside that article, I'm getting the impression that this chapter is most relevant for your case.

If, and only if, that doesn't fix your problems, provide the information requested in this post.

I would really like to stick to Skolelinux but I will try AntiX when I have time for a full new install later (unless someone suggests another solution) Sorry about skipping that before, I focused on the ideas that didn't make me change distro.
Also, the problem (so far) only affects this one machine because the others (of the same model, weirdly) have different wifi cards which have worked right away or with easy fixes.

@ondoho
Sorry for not listing everything I tried but I already came across this, too. Nevertheless, I tried again but it gives me the same error when trying to install firmware-b43-installer from stretch as from buster (see above)
Using b43-fwcutter directly didn't work because the link to kernel.org is apparently outdated and gives me a 404 and I don't know the site so trying to find the linked driver(?) manually would probably not work.
I even tried the more elaborate way of using Ndiswrapper but it didn't work. I'll admit to not quite knowing what I was doing there but only following the instrctions given.

So, the requested outputs...

I'm not sure if this is normal but the syslog is very long, multiple pages long. I'll put the entries from only today (this bootup) but if you want the whole thing, I can give that, too.

Minor update.
Tried Antix. Had some minor installation issues but now it works and wifi is running after the first proper boot, using the b43-pci-bridge module which skolelinux also tries to use before installing the packages introducing wl... though, it doesn't work there.
I could stick with Antix (after doing a proper installation) but this tells me it must work on other debian distros, too... or not?

Using b43-fwcutter directly didn't work because the link to kernel.org is apparently outdated and gives me a 404 and I don't know the site so trying to find the linked driver(?) manually would probably not work.

I see.
I'm sorry I have no direct experienxce with this, but it looks like it might be the thing that is blocking your attempts to install the appropriate driver.
Can you apt update & upgrade normally?
Which command produced that output, and is it the full output?

You mean this command:
Code:
sudo cat /var/log/syslog | grep -Ei 'net|wpa|dhc'
Yes, that would seem very relevant.

Yes, apt update and upgrade work without any problems (afair), it's only installing firmware-b43-installer and the legacy version that act weird, as far as I can see.

The error shows up when I try to apt install the package above.
It's missing the previous part about trying to do the usual install things.

I'd put the whole thing and the syslog but right now I still have antix installed, so I'll have to wait until I get around to doing a full new install (Yay)

Apparently the b43-firmware-installer does not work anymore.
Skolelinux is Debian stable based, yes?

In any case, you might want to read this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...oadcom_BCM4311
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless
Keep in mind it's for a rather different distro, but the information found on Archwiki is usually top quality.
