dell inspiron b130, graphics problem


i'm using a intel 915 graphics card...
its umm...integrated with my motherboard

but i can't get it installed
i look on previous posts
i can use the 1280x800 resolution in 32bit mode color but i can't run games
i've been trying countlessly for weeks to get this thing to work
i swear i've gotten carpel tunnel by searching google...

can someone please point me to how to install this damned thing?

btw i'm new to this whole linux stuff
keep it down to earth and simple for me? ^_^

also
my model is ubuntu 8.10 "intrepid"

If you can get 1280x800 resolution, it sounds like the driver is already installed.. That graphics chip is pretty low end and I don't believe it supports accelerated 3D graphics very well if at all. not really a good option for gaming. Since yuo are running Ubuntu 8.10 I believe your system will be using the "intel" driver.

To verify what Graphics driver you are actually running, could you post he output of the following commands ?

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i driver

glxinfo | grep direct

info from the second command says that the command is not found? i'll get back to you on this one

Oh yeah, the second command I posted is bad. I added extra letters that don't belong there, Sorry 'bout that. I will edit the original post to correct it.

Matched intel for the autoconfigured driver
So your system has autodetected the new 'intel' driver for your graphics display adapter.

Provided the second command shows that Direct Rendering is enabled, then I don't believe there is anything you can do to improve the performance of your graphics, other than get an nVidia or ATI card to add into your system. Integrated Graphics chips are usually very low end and are good for office type applications but rarely ever are they good for gaming.
