Default resolution set too high; cannot access RL5

So I've just compiled and installed the proprietary fglrx drivers from ATi using the directions in the Ubuntu Wiki. That all went fine, but now when I get to the login screen, my monitor refuses to display anything because it can't run anything at 1600x1200. How do I set X to start at a lower resolution, such as 1440x900? Here's my xorg.conf just in case.

By the way, I'm running Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10) with a Radeon 9800 Pro on a Xerox LCD (forgot the model) through VGA.

Okay, I did dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg and set the default driver to fglrx, and now I can access X. However, DRI isn't enabled, and the max resolution is 1024x768. Any ideas?
