"CUPSEXT could not be loaded" error with hplip 3.11.1 on opensuse 10.1

Hi,

I have opensuse 10.1, kernel rev: 2.6.16.13-4-default. I recently bought a new hp deskjet 2050 all-in-one printer and upgraded from hplip-1.6.9 to hplip-3.11.1

The automatic install worked okay with:

~> sh hplip-3.11.1.run

The were some missing dependencies which were optional, and related to unused features like fax which I disabled with "custom" install so that the installation was clean, but when I try to setup the printer eg with

~> hp-setup

it does not happen and the only error message is:

Warning: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.

I've searched around a bit and this seems to be a common enough problem, but I can't see anthing saying what to do about it on Suse 10.1

What is CUPSEXT?

Thanks in advance.

andrew.

Did you upgrade or just install another hplip pkg? Maybe you need to remove the previous pkg first.

Hi Time traveller,

To begin with, I just installed the new 3.11.1 hplip package but later went back and manually removed both the 1.6.9 and 3.11.1 versions then reinstalled the 3.11.1. Did not help.

HP's linux support website says The hplip 3.11.1 version has been verified with suse 11.0 and later, but it does not mention suse 10.1 (although the automatic installer correctly recognised the suse 10.1 version and did not complain).

From that, I thought CUPSEXT (whatever it is) must be there in suse 11 but not suse 10?

I googled cupsext found out a) this is a common problem, b) cupsext is a "c-program that extends python" and c) I got several hits for "cupsext.so" at the rpmfind website, but all the suse rpms there are for later versions - 11.0+. All the hits were various versions of the hplip software.

From that it looks like cupsext must be part of the hplip package after all.

So I am now confused. Is cupsext a preexisting part of suse 11 OS or is it a part of the hplip package which either isn't getting installed or isn't getting installed right?? Can I get it by itself?

regards....

Andrew.

Okay, so I upgraded to openSUSE 11.3

Problem solved.
