cpufrequency scaling Celeron M problem

I am trying to enable cpu frequency scaling on a 1.6 Intel Celeron M processor.

When I try to modprobe various kernel modules all I get are the following errors:

debian:/home/tuxedup# modprobe speedstep_centrino
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino (/lib/modules/2.6.18-3-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko): No such device

debian:/home/tuxedup# modprobe p4_clockmod
FATAL: Error inserting p4_clockmod (/lib/modules/2.6.18-3-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/p4-clockmod.ko): No such device

debian:/home/tuxedup# modprobe acpi_cpufreq
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.18-3-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device

All the guides I have tried all say that the p4-clockmod works for an Intel Celeron M.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is wrong? Does my version of Celeron M simply not support frequency scaling? What can I do enable it?

Some details of my cpu are

debian:/home/tuxedup# cpufreq-info
cpufrequtils 002: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006
Report errors and bugs to linux@brodo.de, please.
analyzing CPU 0:
no or unknown cpufreq driver is active on this CPU

debian:/home/tuxedup# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "model name"
model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) M CPU 420 @ 1.60GHz

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Michael

That would be my guess. My 1.3GHz Celeron M doesn't (family 6, model 13, stepping 6.)

I also just noticed that /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor doesnt exist. And all the guides I have followed require this so the govenor can be set.

However modprobe speedstep_lib worked without errors. But the above stops me going any further

And that the acpi stuff only shows this. I also cannot control fans either as it does not create anything to do with fan status.

tuxedup@debian:/proc/acpi/processor/CPU0$ cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling
state count: 8
active state: T0
states:
*T0: 00%
T1: 12%
T2: 25%
T3: 37%
T4: 50%
T5: 62%
T6: 75%
T7: 87%

So it looks like I will not be able to enable cpufrequency scaling then.

Thanks again

Michael

FWIW, my new 64-bit Sempron 3000+ only supports two speeds, 1.0Ghz and 1.8GHz and also has no fan speed control. It's a retail/boxed version with AMD supplied heatsink/fan. So I guess it's a case of "getting what you paid for", or less.
