Well, no one has responded to my post, and since then I have been digging. I tried several things, including writing my own mode timings, finding and trying others, and LOTS of editing of xorg.conf and restarting X.
A couple of notes: 915resolution was tried, and it changes the BIOS tables of the Intel (945) chipset I am using.
Also, going to 1280x1024 frames are NOT the native of the 2216, which is 1880x1050.
The "fix" was to again backup a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and run xorgsetup (I have Slackware 12.1 installed). After about 30 hours of researching, and dinking around, VOILA, the screen was really the right resolution. I'm still cleaning my glasses.
Hopefully this helps the next sap, who like me, was looking for a solution to the widescreen on Linux problem. With xorgsetup, it seems stupidly easy.
