Check to see if you have the correct modules loaded, do (as root), "lsmod" and look for either usb-uhci or usb-ohci, usbcore and printer in the output.

lsmod does not produce the desired result.

i think i may want to compile my kernel including these options. can i recompile my kernel with those module included and keeping my current settings?

my current kernel in 2.4.7-10 running on redhat linux 7.2

thanks for your time

You should have the modules already with a stock redhat kernel, you need to load them with "modprobe module-name". Have a look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt for general info on modules and you can read about the different usb modules in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/usb.
