Conexant modem (intern)

Hello everybody

I know there are many threads concerning modem problems in this forum, but i just didn't find the answer.

I'm a complete newbie.

My conexant modem (PCI) just doesnt work on my new Mandrake 9.1 Linux. It says it doesn't find the device.

I've been searching the net for drivers and found one *.rpm file. I installed it but the OS still doesn't find the modem.

The directory "/dev/modem" is not present on my PC (could it be hidden?)

What should be my next steps?

I'm still using windose (losedose??) xp (i'm sorry tp admit that... :-( ) on the same PC, the modem works fine there...

thanks for any hints.

D.

yes i did.

After several attempts it finally "worked". It said, that the modem should be accessible via /dev/ttySHCF0.

First: how do these /dev directories work?? what are they?
second: there was no /dev/ttySHCF0 after "hcfpciconfig" was finished....

i'm sorry to bother u guys with my newbie questions, but i'd really like to learn how to use linux - windose sucks....

After hcfpciconfig during the rpm install, afterwards as root, and then again as a normal user, I know I get /dev/ttySHCF0 and /dev/modem is a symbolic link to it. Try hcfpciconfig as root and other, and then report back any problems.

i'm still trying to get my modem working....

the problem must be somewhere with the symbolic links...
when i try to connect with KPPP through /dev/modem or dev/ttySHCF0 it sais that the links aren't there, which is true.

But when i'm runnig hcfpciconfig (as root) it sais that the modem should be accessible via dev/ttySHCF0.

What can i do?

Thanks for any help

D.

Have you tried running hcfpciconfig as a normal user before using kppp if you get a problem?
When it works it will create the /dev/ttySHCF0 and /dev/modem links for you.
