cdrom won't open (with no disc in it)

Ok, so this is a relatively new PC, but it doesn't want to open the cdrom/dvdrw draw to put a disc in.

I've tried a couple of distros, and currently I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (but kde as the desktop).

The device is detected fine as when I type "eject cdrom" into a terminal it opens and when closed amarok lists the tracks and plays fine.

Plus, it works fine under windows (yes, I've reverted to dual booting after 3 plus years of nothing but various linux...).

Can anyone point me in the right direction or have any ideas how to cure this please

regards

John

Kubuntu 8.04.1 & KDE 3.5.x =

Sorry I cannot help further, but I went straight back to 8.04 (which is also "Longer Term Supported").

the fstab entry for the cdrom says this
Quote:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
what it all means is a bit of a mystery.

Ah, well one of the reasons why I've changed is because I'm gonna have to learn kde4 sooner or later - but I've changed it to ubuntu but with kde desktop is because the Kubuntu kde4 network manager still seems to have a bug with static IP's why, I don't know (and I couldn't manage to work out what to do about it).

If it wasn't for the problem of the cdrom and not having any sound I'd have stuck to sidux which IMO is very good (and doesn't use bloody sudo - which I find very, very annoying).

regards

John
