cd mounting issue

I've got a problem with mounting cds on my machine.

Whenever I try to mount a data cd, i get the following:

~ $ mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems

I know I've got iso9660 and joliet extentions installed in the kernel.

I can watch dvds and play music cds, so the hardware is fine.

kernel is 2.6.12 gentoo r10. distro obviously gentoo as amd64 install.

any help would be appreciated.

Hello

Have you tried the complete mount command looking like this:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Does it work? Please post the error message.

Also, look in the file /etc/fstab for a line containing /mnt/cdrom. Is there such an entry or maybe an other entry with /dev/cdrom. Post that line too please.

Have a lot of fun

The full line works, for root.

line from fstab is:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro,user,umask=000 0 0

so, can we get the short version working so that my non-root user can mount it?
