CD/DVD drive not working on Debian Sarge

I've got an ASUS CD S520/A Drive and I'm running a fresh install of Debian Sarge with Gnome2.

The first issue I have is that two cd drives show up in the "Computer" drive listing: CD-ROM and CD-ROM(2). I only have the one drive in there.

When I noticed that, I threw a few different cds in there and tried to read them - both music and data discs, to no avail. Same error whenever I try to mount the volume (using either of the two CD-ROMs listed).

I checked the system log and found a this:

Code:
Jul 27 12:53:41 localhost kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Jul 27 12:53:41 localhost kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Jul 27 12:53:41 localhost kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 64
Jul 27 12:53:41 localhost kernel: isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hdc, iso_blknum=16, block=16
I did some googling and found a lot of people with a similar problem on various different platforms, but none of them really had any resolutions (I hate it when people don't do follow up after they've fixed something).

As you can probably tell, I'm a bit of a linux newbie - so any advice/pointers you can give would be very much appreciated.
