Canonscan lide 110 on linux?

I need to replace my trusty Epson Perfection 1650 which has worked well for years. After some research I ordered a Canonscan Lide 110, because it is listed as supported on the Sane website. I do have a genesys driver which works with it according to /etc/sane.d/genesys.conf. (This on Debian Sid.) But I have come across postings here and elsewhere in which people describe difficulty in getting this scanner to work. So, question: should I trust the Sane page and go ahead, or return the scanner unopened for a refund?

in my exp. cannon scanners are to be avoided
the only drivers are ones that the community has made

cannon dose NOT make non windows drivers and they ONLY support windows

i have a perfectly good ( and expensive) cannoscan 6000f that ONLY works on XP
right now it is a paperweight .

Yes, but I wondered whether the SANE page, which reports success, could be trusted. I'm also looking at the Epson v330, which seems to work with linux but needs drivers downloaded from avasys or some such site. I don't know anything about those.

challenge accepted

I got Canon LiDE25 USB flatbed scanner to work a few years ago. It's been a while I'm going from my notes of what worked for me. Maybe something will help?

system stuff, as root
in /etc/inetd.conf see that the following line exists or add it
sane-port stream tcp nowait saned.saned /usr/local/sbin/saned saned

in /etc/services see that the following line exists or add it
sane-port 6566/tcp #SANE network scanner daemon

sane configuration, file locations are from where slackware installs sane
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
commented every line except net and plustek

/etc/sane.d/net.conf
ip address of computer that would like to access scanner

as root, scanimage -L produces something like
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x2220 [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:004:002

/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf
somewhere in the top after comments there's
[usb]

using the result from scanimage -L put the following
[usb] 0x04a9 0x2220
device libusb:004:002
(there's nothing else to change in /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf)

local network goes here
/etc/sane.d/saned.conf
192.168.0.0/24

then as root
if ! id saned; then groupadd saned; useradd -g saned -G scanner -s /bin/false -d /dev/null saned; fi
results in:
uid=1002(saned) gid=102(saned) groups=102(saned),93(scanner)

then
usermod -G scanner 'username'
<adds 'username' to group scanner>

from my notes I either needed to
restart system
or /etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart and /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug restart

Link I used isn't there anymore but I attached the article.

Using these same notes my Canon PIXMA MP620 multi-function peripheral is connected over the network for linux and windows scanning.

cheers!

Thanks for reply. After consulting various sources I'm pretty sure the Canon Lide 100 would work, but in the end I decided to go with the Epson Perfection v330, which seems to be a better machine. It's working fine with the Avasys driver inst alled.
