Cannot watch DVD movie

Hello, this is my first experience with linux and my first question. I have an Acer Aspire 1620, which had Windows for a long. Its internal DVD-RW had broken, so I bought an external USB LG DVD-RW. In Windows, it worked fine. Now, I installed Linux (Mandrake 10.1 - also I tried Ubuntu 4.1 and Fedora Core 4, but I prefer Mandrake), it can read from the USB DVD, but when I insert DVD Movie, no response. Kaffeine doesn't realize a DVD movie is to play, and the same Totem does. What can I do?
Please be descriptive (i.e. don't say "mount the drive", but describe how to mount it). Thank you, and forgive my poor english.

If you search the forum for "play DVD" you will find plenty of threads on it already. Here's a hint: (commercial) DVDs are encrypted and you need additional libraries to access them.

You will have to specify the DVD drive as /dev/sda or whatever SCSI CD node it comes up as. Most distribution uses symbolic links to point to the DVD drive like /dev/dvd pointing to /dev/hdc.

BTW, I do not recommend using USB to play a DVD because USB has much higher latency than firewire. If you notice stuttering, you can use vobcopy to make a mirror copy of the DVD disc. You will need at least 9 GB.
