Cannot access /dev/ttyUSB0 for garmin gps (RESOLVED)

I need to acces my garmin 305 to use Viking or Gpsman. I can't access the gps, :cannot open device.

dmesg:
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid
usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
USB Serial support registered for Garmin GPS usb/tty
garmin_gps 2-1:1.0: Garmin GPS usb/tty converter detected
usb 2-1: Garmin GPS usb/tty converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usbcore: registered new interface driver garmin_gps
garmin_gps: v0.33:garmin gps driver
any ideas?

I've found My Tourbook which works really well with my garmin forerunner 305, just run it as root.

Which 305 do you own? Forerunner or Edge?

Check the permissions for /dev/ttyUSB0. I would say that neither application has access to the serial port.

Two replies in one from work win7.

It's a Forerunner 305. (btw, the Garmin map puts me running in the water instead of along the shore road at Lausanne!Error +/- 5~10m)I'll import other maps one day.

I'll try changing usb port instead of using same hub.

I'll look at permisions later on as well.

Thannks.

Can access after perm change, then perms change alone!

I changed permisions with,
[root@localhost dev]# chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0
Viking could get data from the gps, although I don't know how to use it yet!
Then I did a,
[root@localhost dev]# ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
and got,
crwxrwxrwx 1 root dialout 188, 0 2010-11-03 20:05 /dev/ttyUSB0

Very strange, the permisions had reverted to their former state and needless to say no more access to the gps.
???
