can i set rs6000 to talk to laptop thru serial

hello im a newbie to the wonderful world of linux. i have rs6000 and no monitor for it. my first plan was to use knoppix to change the root pass and explore it further. well the real first issue is seeing the system. it has a token ring card and you have to use the serial port 1 on the rs6000 for the terminal thats about as much as i know about it.

know can i use a linux laptops terminal and configure it to see the serial port for that is happening on the rs6000, like as the main terminal. i have a laptop with fedora core 4 loaded and an older laptop i got mandriva 10.2 on it. this way i can see knoppix boot up and start the configuration.
