I have Damn Small Linux running on an old pII Gateway box that was otherwise rotting in my basement. There's nothing special about it... It has some bland NVidia video card and a 3com NIC.

I'd like to move the hard drive from this box to a "newer" AMD Athlon 1GHz machine w/ ASUS motherboard. I'll bring over the same video and network cards, so really, the only difference is the processor and CPU -- I'll even use the same memory sticks.

Is this possible? I think I tried something like this a long time ago with a SuSE or RH distribution and the machine wouldn't boot past bios post.

I'll admit that I'm an armchair linux admin, so while I really enjoy tinkering with linux, I try to avoid any serious head-scratching situations.

Can anyone offer advice for me on this one?

Processor wouldn't be an issue, but switching from one chipset to another, which switching from even a P2 to P3 would do, switching to AMD even worse. Basically, you would have to recompile the kernel or do a fresh install and move over data... either way, it isn't going to be a trivial hard drive swap.
