Can a portable Hard drive be password protected?

Hello, I have been wanting to ask this question for a long time, I would like to know if usb hard drives and USB stick drives can be password protected and thus require a password before viewing their contents. The reason why I am asking is that with the growing popularity of these devices; I think that if a person loses one of these their private files can be compromised because they are the disposal of anyone. how can I make it so that I am the only one that can access these files?

I hope someone can help me on this

you can encrypt it. however, I can't think how to encrypt it so that it could be read on a Linux or Windows (or mac for that matter) computer.

For linux, I use dm-crypt for encrypting hard drives. you could do the same for your usb
