can't get DSL to work in Knoppix

major newbie here. I heard that Knoppix is the best way to try out Linux before actually partitioning your hard drive for a more permanent version. So i downloaded it and installed it today.

I just can't get the DSL to work. I found a program called "ADSL PPPOE Configuration", and used that. When it was looking for my Ethernet card, the DSL modem activity light blinked, so i know it found the card. It called it "eth0". I answered yes to all the questions. I put in my username and the password on my DSL server. Then it asked if i wanted to open a connection now, and i said yes. it moved on to the next window, which told me the commands for starting a connection (pon dsl-provider) and closing a connection (poff). Then it closed.

So i tried opening Mozilla and surfing, but it wouldn't open any web addresses. Then i opened Gaim, and that wouldn't work.

So i opened the Konsole, and typed the command it gave me (pon dsl-provider) and it said that i do not have permission to use that command.

Does any one know what the problem might be, and how i can my DSL up and running?

dsl problems

ok, so i opened the root command console, (not the shell Konsole) and changed the access to the "dsl-provider" file with the command "chmod a+rwx dsl-provider". Now i can open the file and read it, but it doesn't do anything. Is there a way to open a connection manually?
