Can't use second sata spinning HDD

Right now I have only one Samsung sata SSD connected to my mainboard.

I also have a Seagate 160GB spinning sata HDD.

Problem is if I connect this spinning HDD the computer hangs at the manufacturer's logo screen (Asus)

I am using this mainboard https://www.asus.com/in/Motherboards/H110M-CS/

Any ideas ?

How sure are you that both drives are good?

Both the SSD and the (not working) HDD were in use on my old PC.

After I replaced the motherboard/CPU/Ram I initially connected the SSD only and it booted fine then I tried connecting the spinning HDD and as I said it hang at the Asus logo. So I disconnected the spinning drive and kept using only the SSD.

Now I am running out of disk space so I want to use the spinning drive.

Note: Both the drives were working fine on my old PC.

Check the jumpers on it, if it has them, it maybe set as primary/secondary disk, which could be causing your problem.

The spinning HDD is also a SATA drive not an IDE so no jumpers.

hifi100,

I suspect that you may need to go into the BIOS and change the SATA Mode or something similar.

I assume that the SSD is connected to SATA_1 port and the HDD to SATA_2 port?

Are both the above ports enabled?

Do you have a DVD on one of the other SATA ports?

In your BIOS ensure boot priority is given to the SSD. If the SSD is configured with GPT while the HD is configured in legacy mode, it may be necessary to disable CSM in the BIOS. Change the motherboard ports the SATA cables are connected to if necessary. The HD would best connect to one with a bigger number than the SSD. It may even be necessary, though unlikely with so new a mainboard, in BIOS to set the port the HD is connected to to NONE and let the operating system driver find it.

Also, you should try to connect the hdd to another sata port. If your ssd happens to be an m.2 type, then it is a good chance that when in use, it occupies one sata port.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

I connected the spinning drive then powered on the PC, went into bios.
Unfortunately the bios doesn't detect the HDD.
So I think its dead.

It may be, or that could be something as simple as a bad wire. I would not QUITE give up on it before checking it on another machine with different wire and MB connector.
