can't set up X on Radeon HD 4850 - corrupted screen

Hello everyone,

I am using Linux Gentoo. I have a problem with setting up the X server on my machine with Sapphire ATI Radeon 4850 video card.

When using the fglrx drivers, after starting X the screen goes all garbled, and the system hangs up. I have tried the open source radeonhd drivers and it is little better: X does start correctly, but upon quitting the screen goes dark and an OSD message appears on my monitor saying that the sync rate range has been exceeded (according to the message, up to ~120 kHz!). The xorg log file ends with:
Code:
(II) RADEONHD(0): Query for Restore Registers: failed
(II) RADEONHD(0): Query for Restore Registers: failed
This is really bugging me, especially as I previously had gentoo installed on the same machine, and I don't remember having much problems with starting X (with ATI drivers). I'm really running out of ideas what I could do wrong this time.

I would appreciate any help you may provide.

You can cap the sync rate in /etc/X11/xorg.conf so this does not happen.

... this like yours? This sort of thing seems recent, if it is not fixed by changing the modeline, then you may have a wait.

I am having trouble understanding some of your post:

"upon quitting"? What does this mean?

Do you mean that you can log in and use the gui without incedent, but when you choose to log out or something then things go haywire?

But you said your problems were when "quitting" not starting ... which is it?

??? Which is the distro you have installed now and which previously?
