I'm running RH 7.2 and have used a couple of monitors with no problem.
I just bought a nice new Sony flat screen monitor and it says I need to adjust my video card.
The monitor works fine during startup until my XWindows screen appears. At that point I get:
"Out of scan range
53.7 Khz / 85 Hz"
The documentation that came with the monitor says I need to use the old monitor and adjust the computer's graphics board.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to do that.
I saw some threads on LinuxQuestions.org that said to run 'XFree86 -configure'.
When I run that I get:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
I'm guessing that is because the X Windows session is running.
I'm not sure how to either kill the X Windows session or get the server to boot without bringing up the X Windows session.
You can 'vi' (or your 'fav' editor) your /etc/inittab file, in that file, you will see something like this:
id:5:initdefault:
change it to this:
#id:5:initdefault:
id:1:initdefault:
save the file, reboot. This will bring you up in 'single user mode', where you only get a 'console' log on. fix what you need to, and you can manually 'startx' to bring up x-windows, if it works, edit your /etc/inittab file and change it to this:
id:5:initdefault:
#id:1:initdefault:
and then you should be able to reboot and come up in multi-user mode, just like before. If your 'mods' to your X-windows are not working, have a look at your xlog file in (I'm not sure about RH), /var/log/XFree86.0.log file for hints on what might be wrong. Have fun!
just need to replace 5 in 'id:5:initdefault:' to 3 for multiuser textmode.reboot.From runlevel 3 try xf86config or Xconfigurator or something else.Change the settings into lower values.then 'startx' from command window.
