Can't change permission

Hi all! I have a very strange problem. I have a Debian unstable on my PC, dual-booted with WinXP. I mounted a fat32 partition adding these lines in /etc/fstab, like this:

Code:
/dev/hda5 /mnt/fat vfat users,owner,umask=0777 0 0
I remounted and, as root I can read and write from the mounted partition. Problems come when I try to access the mounted partition with my normal user: access denied. An ls -l shows why:

Code:
 d--------- 2 root root 4096 2006-06-05 19:53 fat
I the sued and tried to change permissions with chmod, like this:

Code:
chmod a+rw fat/
but ls -l shows no change.

I also tried changing the owner, but when I

Code:
chown uruclef fat/
it tells me:

Code:
chown: the owner of fat/ has been changed. Operation not permitted
which is somehow contradictory. ls -l shows no change.

I really don't know what to do! help

PS:
when I su, it tells me
configuration error: object «FAIL_DELAY» unknown
configuration error: object «QUOTAS_ENAB» unknown
configuration error: object «NOLOGIN_STR» unknown
configuration error: object «ENV_HZ» unknown
configuration error: object «PASS_MAX_LEN» unknown
configuration error: object «CHFN_AUTH» unknown
configuration error: object «CLOSE_SESSIONS» unknown

both if my pwd is right or wrong.

Thank you!

Just off the top of my head the umask=0777 needs to be umask=0000 (umask is opposite of chmod).
