get the Nvidia FX5900XT to start gaming under linux safely?
np. sorry I couldnt help. Tis odd UT should crash...
did you ever try xorg with the xorg drivers?. (Compile radeon module in your kernel). They worked good for me...
Forget ATI. I had so many troubles with Doom3, xmame, X11, Flightgear, unreal tournament, etc.... ATI SUXXOR. Before, i had a NVIDIA, and it worked fine and it was easy to configure. I'll buy a new one soon.
thx for your very helpful post - I just ripped out my ATI card from my brand new IBM Thinkpad - haha....
Would be great if all these stupid idiots can keep there flames and provide some useful hints for people who are stuck with this....
I CANT CHANGE - I have thinkpad and cannot change the GraphicsBoard, the FireGL is a great piece of hardware and works (on Windows...) better than all the Nvidia stuff
Distribution: Slackware 10.2 kernel 2.6.13, Gentoo amd64, Some mish-mash of programs that started with slack 9.0

Did you try posting your question in a new thread so people could help you with your problem? Or reading the ~35 other threads that offer ATI help?
Just the title of this thread should tell you that it was bound to be full of posts by people that have given up and want to vent.
I started here because kleptophobiac posted that he got it to work and I wanted to contact him directly - perhaps I should really open a new thread, but in general I dont like opening new ones when there are exisiting ones with the same problem

This wasn't an answer to you. Don't be so selfish .
funny how linux is getting me in the mood to update my newly updated system. Well, its not completely updated, more half-baked at the moment. Im still running my radeon 7500 and it barely runs. 256 megs of ram just isnt cutting it, in a perfect world I have a gig. and my monitor...ho boy, its dying. Text is bluuury.
But yes, ati has been a headache from what Ive seen (especialy with a non rpm slackware distro like mine) and realy I think a nice GF4 video card would go nicely with my nforce2 chip.
