dd copies the data, but destroy the partition sda1. A second partition should be useful, but I don't recommend to dd a flashstick (I destroyed one with dd or was it fdisk ? ;-)
Will the installer not recognize the stick to make a "proper" installation ?
Uhhh, RedHat focus now on Enterprises and big business.
Maybe dd the Knoppix-CD to USB Stick should work, but the space is not enough, and downsizing will be too time-consuming ?
A normal Installation with the minimum will work, BUT your stick will die shortly, due all log and temp files will be written on the stick who "just" can be written 10000 to 100000 times (sounds much but with a few writing every second done very fast) and writelocked will there be problems.
How about the following alternatives:
-Big CompactFlash as hda repacement
-Boot from network
-Customizing Knoppix ?
-Build a Linux from Scratch (= your own Distribution)
And maybe is an USB-Stick Linux distribution already out there ?
If you intend to run Linux from a USB Flash disk, it must run from a RAMDISK, or else your Flash Disk will be toasted, like fluppi said.
I made my own distro to run from a RAMDISK, it isn't that hard. The problem is that you are limited by the machine's physical amount of RAM, so you can't really get X or anything without running out of free RAM. This wasn't a problem for me, but you seem to want a GUI.
You could copy the contents of the Damn Small Linux disk onto your flash, and boot it with SYSLINUX. DSLinux is already designed to run from a read-only media, so you shouldn't have any problems with toasting your drive. Plus, it is small, only 48 MB.
