When I try the "modprobe -l" command I just get this "modprobe: invalid option -- 'l'"

Pardon my inadvertence. I meant
Code:
lsmod <Enter>
or
cat /proc/modules
That way you should be able to pinpoint the nvidia module loaded, the which, you may blacklist.

To know more about the module you may query
Code:
modinfo "module_name"
example:
modinfo snd
Don't forget to install the xorg.vesa module.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

In that case, the mdm may have problem in the install. Try another Mint with a different but better window manager, try Mint Xfce32bit, or try another distribution which is very easy install and easy to manage, a SalixLive DVD installer or the respectable Arch Linux, this one Arch has a very good documentation help resource.

By the way, the window manager MDM designed by Mint to run Cinnamon is only new though it is derived from GTK. I am not really familiar with it, as my last install for Mint was still on version 11.

Try the linked distros, have confidence.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
