bios password blues- anyone know a crack?

my hp pavilion had a bios password put in wwhen i bought it and hp needs a copy of the purchase receipt to tell me how to reset the password after a two day waiting period. i cant tell you how much this frustrates me. i cant find my receipt so ill have to go back to where i purchased it and get a copy and what if someone buys one second hand? there would be no way to get around this for them and they could never access the bios setings. before i go insane waiting the three or four days to for hp to tell me the secret, does anyone else know or know a crack for this? hp pavilion xt118

Take the battery out your mobo?
Flash the bios?
Demand the thing from HP, coz either you have a mobo, or it's someone else's with craptastic default password security, and you could just buy-return the same brand to get the password... and you're not doing that are you

i cant remove the batt cause 1) its soldered in 2) laptop bios password is apparently non volatile (sp?) and hp wont budge on the policy cause they are afraid it might be stolen. ridiculous absolutley ridiculous. there is a i think a jumper to short and clear out the password chip but i cant find reliable info on it. and i dont want to crack the case and void the waranty.

Unsolder the battery.

Also, if you still have a copy of XP lying around, there are literally thousands of bios password crackers out there for win. I've never searched for one for linux since the only time I've needed one was on a win box.

The one I used was very simple. Launch the program, it opened up a dos screen, and then said "Now reboot". Rebooted, and went into the bios, the password screen came up and I hit return and it accepted it. I then disabled the password altogether and it was good to go from there.

HTH

Cool

I know just what to do. Here's the hacker's advice ...

Get a prog called "killcmos.com".

http://www.utilitygeek.com/details.php?fileid=82

Make a DOS boot disk. You can create that from any version of windows, or at the command prompt of a DOS machine or DOS shell, type sys a: with the floppy in the drive. Put the killcmos.com file and killcmos.nfo on it too (I think it's nfo, maybe ini or something, but it has a data file, I know that).

Then, withthe floppy in the drive, type "edit a:\autoexec.bat". When the blue screen of the editor comes up (not of death), type killcmos. Then press Alt, F, X, Y. Now be warned, whenever the disk is in your computer when its booting up, it'll kill your cmos settings. This will happen to *any* computer if its in the drive, unless the copmuter is setup not to boot from floppies (the computers at my school are set up that way, I hate it).

So just pop in the disk of the computer you need to break into, and turn it on. This procedeure will work on even linux machines. But when the password gets cracked, you need to setup your CMOS settings again. So go through it and set it up.

Good luck!

Oh Brother!

ok you guys are overlooking a very simple solution.

1. Get the mobo specs and locate the BOIS chip.

2. VERY CAREFULY open the case and find it on the mobo and determine if it can be removed or not AND NOTE the manufacturer of the mobo its self.

3. IF the bios IS removable, contact the MOTHERBOARD MANUFACTURER and give them all pertinate info and request a new bios chip.

4. When it arrives, CARFULY pop the old one out and put the new one in. !!!!!!! WARNING !!!!!!! BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THIS. DO NOT TOUCH ANY PINS ON THE NEW BIOS!!!!!

5. boot the machine , problem solved.

In most cases mobo manufacturers will send you a new bios for free, I have had to do it on a few occasions for various reasons and usualy you will end up with the latest bois release as well.

Just dont tell them about your password problem, make something up. lightning work well for this.

it may not be the best answer but it will do the trick if all else fails.

best of luck

the bios is from what i read removable with difficulty but it seems the password is stored on a seperate eeprom near the bios chip and is soldered on. ive seen a picture of a couple of pins on this chip that are supposed to clear it if you jump them but call me a coward i cant do it. maybe if i knew the info was reliable. or i hadnt always dreamed of having a laptop. but itll be fine now i got a new receipt and sent it in to hp. i should have the way in after a couple days i guess. im guessing they have a backdoor password that is generated off of the serial number and part number or something like that.

Dude, unsolder the battery. Its easy. Just get a soldering iron (like 4-5 bucks at radio shack) Heat it up and lightly touch it to the solder. The proper way would be to at the same time to touch the tip of a solder coil to the old solder. Then it would flow. But they probably use so little solder all you need to do is touch it for a split second and it will melt. Use like a paper clip or something to pry it out as soon as you see the solder flow.

It may seem like its hard, but its not. Just find a old circuit board and put a glob of solder on something, let it dry then practice melting it. Its so easy that i was soldering when i was like 10. I used to build rc cars and a couple things had to be soldered. Its practically impossible to mess up. As long as you ONLY touch the solder, how can you mess up??
