Bad memory prevents computer switchon?

Hi.

On three occasions recently I have turned on the power and been presented with a dead computer. On all three occasions, after pulling power cables, reseating cards, checking power cables, I have been able to get the computer running by removing a faulty memory stick.

The machines were one AMD X2-4200+, unknown motherboard, and two compaq desktops.

In the past memory problems have always left me with a live machine that either reports a problem on the screen or beeps at me. Has anyone else noticed this change in behaviour?

Ta

Steve

Prior to POST there is a basic system check still left over from the original 8080's. The first 64k must be good otherwise it won't go to post.

But in your case it still could be all sorts of issues. A bad memory module could still draw too much power or stop clocks or could have been some ESD issue that circuits are not re-setting or who knows what. Lucky you figured it out.
