audio doesn't work for non-privileged user

Hi all,
I recently installed debian and I'm facing this sound issue. My non-root user cannot access the soundcard correctly. While running xmms as root I can get the sound, but when non-privileged used tries running xmms I get an error saying that "sound card is either blocked or not configured properly". What is the reason?

My user is added to the audio group. Here is the line from /etc/group
audio:x:29:cheema. Any Ideas?

That seems like you have your output plugin not configured properly go into the preferences off the options menu and change to whatever one you use for the sound system.

What are the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer? Sometimes these issues can be fixed by running
Code:
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
