Hi All,

I'm new to this forum, had a look at some of the user issues and could not find any relative similarities. Basically brand new to 10.04, but will try and provide as much detail as possible:

The Scenario:

• I have been tasked to create a standard image from the latest Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, that can be distributed to a whole pile of different hardware.

• Trying to stick to the standard Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic (upgraded from 2.6.32-21-generic), I have tried not to customise too much.

• I do however have one notebook, that seems to have issues and I have been bashing my head around one particular problem for a while now.

The Hardware:

• HP Compaq nx8220 (Centrino 1.6GHz, 2GB Mem, 80GB HDD and of course:

• ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600] Graphics Controller

Desired Results:
Need full graphic functionality with Compiz/Emerald on the base-image. This so that users can be "enticed" to use Ubuntu in a soon-to-be OpenSource-Friendly environment.

Symptoms:

• Using the Alternate i386 Edition, cannot boot into the "text-mode" installation. The setup loads, but there is no display at all. Even invoking CNTRL+ALT+F2(F3 and F4 etc.), the display does not respond.

• Using the Desktop i386 Edition boots into the installation and facilitates the installation to the drive. This all using a standard VESA driver it seems...

• Once the installation is complete and installing fglrx and what seem to be all the driver modules, System -> Preferences -> ATI Catalyst Control Center (Administrative), says that there is a problem and configuration, using "aticonfig" is suggested.

• Running aticonfig gives = "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected"

• There does not even seem to be an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

• Generating an xorg.conf file is not possible, as the system does not seem to support "text-mode"

Failed Attempts:

• http://www.ati.com does not have a driver for the Radeon Mobility X600 card and the referral to HP itself is useless, as they only provide Windows drivers.

• Even after attempting to manually compile the driver, retrieved from http://www.ati.com, resolving multiple dependencies, the system still cannot seem to properly install the compiled packages. This seems to be due to some discontinued GL-specific modules.

The Begging:

Not sure what else to try and should you require a retrace of the steps taken, or some log extracts, will try to assist (have reinstalled several times using different hardware support "tricks" as per the release notes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop.

Any assistance in this matter would be much appreciated

First, the fglrx drivers from AMD/ATI stopped supporting that GPU over a year ago. You'll have to use the open source drivers (which do support 3D acceleration and run compiz just fine). The Desktop CD for Ubuntu 10.04 should be using those drivers by default, not VESA. What makes you think they are using VESA?

Hi Adam,

Perhaps it's my understanding of the VESA system (or the opensource "ati" driver), that led me to that term. Apologies for that...

I have not been able to enter a console and then start GDM, this would give me the opportunity to see the driver in use via the logs.

If the Desktop edition uses the proprietary drivers bundled with Ubuntu, why do these not work in the Alternate Edition of 10.04?

This is the first time I have been unable to diagnose graphics issues, as I am unable to access a full text-mode console.

Does that help you understand the problem better?

No, not at all. The Desktop edition does not use the proprietary driver. Again, the proprietary driver does not work for your GPU. The desktop edition uses the open source driver.

When you boot up, does X start? Can you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a post here? If X doesn't start, try running 'startx' and show us the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated by that attempt.

Sorry, my mistake, I was typing what I was relaying to someone else. Seems to happen often in my old age

I am referring to the free driver that comes bundled with Ubuntu (Previously "ati"). I know that the X600 GPU is no longer supported, was just wandering if there are any other alternatives...

X-Windows does start at boot, however you are unable to access the consoles (TTY's 1 through 6). Also, once the machine is at the Login Screen, there is no ability to access the Console through CNTRL+ALT+F$x.

As for the logs, XORG does not seem to be working, as there is no xorg.conf file. I will see if there are any useful entries for X under /var/log/*.

xorg.conf is generally optional when not using proprietary drivers. That does not mean that Xorg isn't working.

The open source radeon driver is the only one that will work with your GPU under Ubuntu 10.04 and provide 3D acceleration. What happens if you hit control+alt+f3? If absolutely nothing happens, then something completely unrelated to the video driver is intercepting that keybinding. If your console is black (but not asleep) then it sounds like getty isn't running on the tty. If the console gets all screwed up, then you have likely hit a driver bug.

Hi Adam,

My recent attempt to install older libraries and an "older" distributed driver failed miserably Not sure if I am using a driver that is still too new (released with Dapper 6.0.6)...

Anyway, the problem with the graphics on boot/install: For instance, if I use the Ubuntu 10.04 i386 Alternate disk, I get prompted to select my initial install language. Thereafter, the screen goes blank and to answer your question, CNTRL+ALT+F3 leaves no response from the system. However, if I use any of the sequences from F2-F6 and then trigger a CNTRL+ALT+DEL, the machine does not even reboot (if there had been a problem with GETTY?). But if I use the Desktop CD, the Terminals do not respond, but I get into the LIVE/INSTALL mode using the included driver.

What I have since done, is also created an Alternate install on another machine and imaged the system across to the nx8220. This seems to now give me the ability to use the terminal and check the logs during boots etc.

Hi Adam,

Also, I did try to remove the "Screen" sections from a "made" configuration file for Xorg. Trying to use aticonfig -f (and --initial), just does not seem to work, as it needs a configuration template copied to /etc/X11. I have searched and cannot find a copy of this file that the script seems to accept.

So, any assistance with the above post would really be appreciated

Sorry, but I'm done trying to help. I have told you three times in this thread that fglrx will not work with Ubuntu 10.04 and your GPU, but you just won't listen.

Linux is modular, there must be a way to make the X600 GPU work properly under Ubuntu 10.04. If it is a Kernel limitation, I will have to recompile...

I am sorry if you feel as if I were being inattentive to what you were saying, I heard you the first time. I am just not the type of individual who gives up that easily.

I have a few notebooks here that are using this GPU and I need to make them work. This will probably benefit some others out there too, but we should be working together to make OpenSource more hardware-friendly. This at the end of the day is the appeal of the Community Strategy. I don't want to fight at all...

If there is anyone else out there that could provide some comments, knowledge or wisdom on this thread...it will be welcomed with a smile

If you want help getting the open source driver working, fine, I will help with that. Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from when you used the radeon driver (but make sure you deinstall fglrx completely, as well as the nvidia driver that you managed to install for some reason I will never understand). As I have said, 3D acceleration is supported by the open source drivers. It's not as fast as fglrx was, but compiz will definitely run.

You want to make open source more hardware friendly, but it's hard to get more hardware friendly than supporting a GPU with open source drivers that are part of Xorg and the kernel.

If you insist on using fglrx, use Ubuntu 8.10.

Thank you for the reply.

I am in the process of re-imaging the notebook again, so that I can give you a log from a relatively clean install (without my previous fglrx attempts). The only reason that the NVIDIA module even appears in the log file, is due to the original machine, used to install Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate, having an Nvidia Graphics Card. The clone brought these log files across. I am not sure that Xorg even logs to this file at all, but will insert a place-holder just to be sure.

Will try to get it running with the "radeon" driver and if there is any content in the log file, will post it for you.

I am not fussy as to how it works, just need Compiz and all it's features to work properly. For instance, as part of the Go-OpenSource drive we have here, we need to demo the graphic capabilities of Ubuntu 10.04. And the chosen method is to use the 3D Desktop Cube, even though personally I set the Visual Effects under Appearance, to "Normal". But for the demo, we need to make use of the "Extra" Effects...

First, you still have the nvidia driver installed. Remove it and restart X. Second, you appear to have run the compatibility test as some user other than the one that was actually logged in to X at the time.

Compiz and Desktop Cube starting working after fully removing the nvidia driver, as you suggested!

Thank you so much for the help and putting up with my tenacity!!

I had run the Compiz test over an SSH session as the same user, but when running it from gnome-terminal, within X, it gave a slightly different output. All I really wanted to show you was the use of the "radeon" driver.
