ATI Radeon Driver Hell

I've got an ATI Radeon 9200 PCI on a gentoo box running a 2.6 kernel and any time I try to use the hardware acceleration I get crapped on. When I tell X to load with the fglrx driver I get an error about not being able to initialize agp in the Xorg.0.log file. This makes perfect sense what with this being a PCI card.

I've tried setting the BusType "PCI" option in xorg.conf but that still gives me the error. Do I need a different version of the driver or something? What other options do I have?

"fglrx" *doesn't* support pci cards, use DRI's "radeon" instead if you want hardware acceleration.

...then BusType "PCI" can be used, it's a DRI specific option.

Okay, so I changed the driver to "radeon" in xorg.conf, but now I'm getting this error in my Xorg.0.log file:

What could be causing this? Is there some option in my xorg.conf that I'm missing? I'll post it here:

Your kernel doesn't have a "radeon" module or "fglrx" is still loaded
...is the most obvious reasons for such an error.

Try modprobe -v radeon and see what it spits out, before you try to start X.

Okay, so I recompiled the kernel with the radeon drivers compiled as a module, and I unloaded fglrx but I still get no direct rendering and the same message in my Xorg.0.log file. Are there any other log files that I could look at to get more specific info? Is there anything else that I can do to try and get this working?

...still stands and post the output.

Also if you installed ATI's proprieaty driver, it most likely overwrote Xorg's libGL.so.1.2, you'll have to straighten that out eventually too, if it's the case.
...but that has nothing to do with the "radeon" module not loading though.
