Hi guys, I have a very strange problem: my ATI drivers get installed perfectly as usual, they are used by X
Code:
[ice@vega ~]$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
and they are flawless in some games, for example Trackballs. But fgl_glxgears gives me this:
Code:
[ice@vega ~]$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
1199 frames in 5.0 seconds = 239.800 FPS
X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 14 (X_GetGeometry)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 51
Current serial number in output stream: 51
And the result is that I see a rotating cube that flashes black and blue, instead of having rotating gears inside. So it happens that games such as Cube or Gl-117 (too bad I can't post screenshots) run smooth, but with no background!
I don't know how to explain this better: for example, Cube is a First Person Shooter, right? I see just my gun and some ammo spread all over the scene, but the scene itself is a static image copied from the clipboard! And Gl-117 is exactly the same: I can see the smoke coming out of the plane and some missiles that explode, but the rest is completely black.
I'm running kernel 2.6.14 on Fedora Core 4, the problem arose since version 1637 and I still can't find a solution. Everything worked fine with kernel 2.6.13. I used to install the ATI proprietary drivers using the installer provided by www.ati.com, but when I noticed this strange behavior I tried to use the Livna repository: it is exactly the same. I know about some problems that could arise mixing the DAG repository and Livna, so since I began using the second one I disabled the first.
I re-installed Fedora 4, this time using just the Livna repository. I upgraded everything, so now I have again the latest kernel and fglrx module available. Unfortunately that didn't solve my problem, it is exactly like before.
I forgot to say that I know about the existence of patches around the internet, but as much as I know they are useful if the module can't compile, while mine gets installed with no problems at all. I tried to use them too once (before re-installing), but they had no effect. Does anyone have my same problem, even if not solved yet, or am I the only one?

im using the latest 2.6.14 kernel and ati drivers version 8.20.8 and am having no troubles at all. If you don't have the latest drivers they wont work well with kernel 2.6.13 or 2.6.14 from what i've read, but my system works fine now and faster then ever .
I can't believe it: I re-installed again, just to be sure that I did everything properly, and once again I have the latest kernel (2.6.14-1.1653_FC4) and latest drivers (8.20.8.1-0.lvn.2.4), and once again I have a BadDrawable error. If someone has enough experience to help me (I don't, as you can see) please tell me which output you want me to post, dmesg or so. Thanks again,

Well try using the actual ati package from www.ati.com and compiling your own kernel. Make sure you have xlibmesa-gl and all the x-window-system-core things (sorry i've only used debian, dont know what it would be translated as in Fedora Core). You might want to ask at a Fedora Core forum, or switch distros to test it, because i've never had any problems in debian (sarge, etch, sid). Sorry that i can't help you out.
This is a great advice, thank you! I never imagined there was a specific forum for Fedora users! Now that I see it I find it obvious!
I tried to check some kernel options, but they all look right so I didn't want to risk by re-compiling. The ATI installer you talk about is the first mean I used to install the ATI drivers, and it worked perfectly before kernel 2.6.14: in fact, I began using the livna repository because the installer stopped working for me, but it didn't solve... Anyway I posted my problem on FedoraForum.org, let's see if they can tell me something. Thanks again!
