Question ATI Drivers will not enable OpenGL?

I am new to linux and am trying out Mandrake 10.1 with all packages updated. I am running a Shuttle SS51G with a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb card and have Googled up as much as I can in attempts to repair this without asking for help, but most of the things I find appear to be for much older distros & older drivers... Here's what is happening... I download the latest Drivers, and the xORG rpm file & try to run it. When I do, I get this error:
Installation failed:
file /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 from install of fglrx_6_8_0-8.14.13-1 conflicts with file from package libxorg-x11-6.7.0-4.3.101mdk
I have tried logging into console as root, before starting X & just installing the driver files from there, and that works, but still no OpenGL. When I go into the Computer Management/hardware/video card, click configure, and it gives me the option to "enable OpenGL" support, I click that button and it doesn't do anything... The Directions on the ATI page look very simple, if only that Install Guide would pop up so I could do what they say One thing I have noticed is that Xorg is still 6.7 in the hardrake menu, and the rpm is using 6.8.. I tried to enable OpenGL both before updating anything, and after doing the chmod +x and then ./<filename>.run
Any suggestions? Please go step by step as I am only familiar with the basics as of yet. Of the 3 days I've had this install going, most of it has been in google looking for answers, trying the suggestions, then reinstalling after that suggestion breaks X. Thanks

you might want to uninstall any fglrx packages already installed by default. This what I had to do on Ubuntu before installing/building the driver from ATI.

switched distros

Thanks... I kinda fixed it a different way. I decided to nix Mandrake & their package management & move to Slackware 10.1 and the drivers installed perfectly. I spent less time with the format/reinstall than I would have spent fighting Mandrake all day
