ATI driver promlems

Hi.. I've installed the ATI drivers for my Radeon Mobility 9700.
I have lounced the 'fglrxconfig'. And did everything it said.
Now I run startx. When I do this it switches into Gnome. Now iam logged in as root in Gnome desktop. Is this what is supposed to happen? And if so. What to do?
My problem is that my resolution is (after the driver installation) set to 640-400. And I cant change it back. Simply nothing happens when I do it..

Hope someone can help. thx

Hello !. I don't have the same card as you do but I think that you should be able to solve the trouble doing this :

1 - Open you xorg.conf file
2 - Go to the screen section. You should see something like this :

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) 86C326 5598/6326"
Monitor "Monitor genérico"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

3 - Change the resolution. Example : If I have this :

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x400"
EndSubSection

it means that I'm able to use a resolution of 640x400 in 24 bpp depth, if I want to change to other then you can remove the current resolution or add new ones. Example :

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x400" "800x600"
EndSubSection

Here I only added the 800x600 reolution. If you only want 800x600, then

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

Don't forget to change the modes for other depths and that the key combination ctrl+alt+plus switches to greater resolution and ctrl+alt+minus switches to a lower resolutions. Hoped I helped in one or another way.
