ata1.00 exception Emask... frozen

I'll admit that I'm not much of a hardware guy, but I desperately need to fix this issue.

I would say that perhaps 5-8 times per day I'll be coding in VIM (or whatever) and the terminal will just 'freeze'. Another terminal open will tell me it's not that VIM is really frozen, but that my processor is pegged.

It will usually stay pegged for about 30 seconds, then starts its way back to 0 with normal operations resuming. At that moment, /var/log/messages receives the following:

Code:
Sep 24 15:15:28 localhost kernel: ata1.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x44050000 action 0xa frozen
Sep 24 15:15:28 localhost kernel: ata1: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake DevExch }
Sep 24 15:15:28 localhost kernel: ata1.00: cmd ca/00:08:69:62:21/00:00:00:00:00/e9 tag 0 dma 4096 out
Sep 24 15:15:28 localhost kernel: res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x14 (ATA bus error)
Sep 24 15:15:28 localhost kernel: ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: ata1: soft resetting link
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: ata1: EH complete
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 312581808 512-byte hardware sectors (160042 MB)
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
Sep 24 15:15:29 localhost kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
Does anyone have ANY idea what could be causing such a failure?

I've searched and searched, but just can't quite seem to find anything specific to the messages. Plus with my not-so-good comprehension of the hardware pieces, it makes it even more difficult.

Here is the uname info:
Code:
[root@localhost examples]# uname -a

The output of "lspci" would have been most useful. I believe there have been some lockups on some controllers that were fixed lately. I see some google hits on your error ("PHYRdyChg CommWake DevExch") so you might pursue that. But give the output of lspci first so we can see what controller you're using.

good start and thanks for the response.

here is the fully verbose lspci output:

Google shows a couple of posts suggesting you add the following boot parameter:
Code:
pci=noacpi
If the problem doesn't occur with an older kernel, you might consider switching back, or trying an even more recent kernel.
