Question Ask for help! My computer has no sound.

I had been using the headphone jack on my computer's mainframe to plug in my headphones to listen to sound, but today it suddenly stopped making sound.
The speaker option in the audio options of the computer has also disappeared, and there is only an "HDMI" option left, but still no sound, can someone who knows how to help me out? Thank you very much!

More info needed to get any help - what computer (manufacturer/model) - what operating system/distro - what desktop environment/window manager in use, etc.

You can try to answer fatmac with the command readout if you have it.

Code:
inxi -Fxz
This command below has a real long read out on hardware also

Code:
sudo lshw
Good luck.

Information on the headphones might help as well as information on any changes made that might affect the headphones and related software. Can you test the head phones on some other hardware to eliminate the possibility that they just died?

Bolded a part for emphasis...think about this for a minute. You don't tell us what kind of 'mainframe' you're using, but if TWO audio devices disappeared at once, then one of two things happened:
  • You got an update and there is a driver problem.
  • Your hardware broke.
Chances are high this is a laptop, so the on-board sound drives both the speakers and headphones. Barring the update issue, did you happen to go into BIOS and do anything?? Anything that could maybe have turned off the on-board audio device??

Beyond that, you don't tell us what kind of hardware, version/distro of Linux, or give us any details other than, "no sound".

By mainframe I take it that the OP is referencing to their CPU tower, as a mainframe is a term that references a computer that takes up a whole room and needs it own power and air-conditioning facilities.

Now I'll admit that my observation and heartsickness can be very annoying. It is still that fact that the OP needs to clairfy what their goals are so that the LQ community can assist them in solving there issues.
