AMD question

I purchased on of those $150 jobs from fye's it cam with Liinspire as the Linux OS.
The processor is a AMD Duron 1.6 gig....do i need to download the 64 bit specificstuff when installing software......actually I am attemptng to install Gentoo and I wasn't quite sure what architecture i should use.

As far as I am aware, the AMD Duron (unlike the Opteron) is a 32-bit CPU. So anything specific to 64-bit CPUs will not work.

If memory serves, the Duron is treated as a K7 architecture, which is call-compatible with the i686 (or i586 i486 or i386 if you're desperate) by the GCC compiler.

No doubt someone will point out some mistakes in the above.

For $150 I hardly see how it can have a 64-bit processor. A 64-bit processor and m/b combo generally run $250 and up.
