AMD 64bit + ATI Radeon 9600 Hard to configure

Hey guys,

I have been surfing all over and trying different things for 24 hours now, I am new at the Linux stuff and a bit confused.

This is my setup HW:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (64bit)
Motherboard: GigaByte GA-K8N-Pro NVIDIA
HD: SATA Seagate 80gb (Serial ATA)
RAM: Corsair 512md RAM LC2 400MHZ
Graphic: AGP ATI Radeon 9600 128mb
Sound: Realtek Onboard Chipset ALC658

I am using Slackware 9.1 which I like very much, so far so good everything works except the sound (ALC658).

Problems are:
- AMD 64bit CPu, should I use the Kernel x86_64 which was initially a port to AMD64.
- SATA drive is not seen during install... I can live with that I have a spare 6GB IDE drive, so I installed on it for now.
- Sound does not work and Realtek support staff told me to use the AC'97 Audio Codec Driver to fix it. unfortunatly it created more problems and I had to go back to previous kernel.
- The NVIDIA Chipset on the motherboard is not recognized by the kernel.
- ATI card, I try installing their drivers fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm, which could not qualify due to dependency errors:

Can anyone help?

I did not know how much info I should put in this post, u know the longuer the less people tend to read. So I will only past was the syslog said abot the NVIDIA and the sound card:

kernel: agpgart: Unsupported NVIDIA chipset (device id: 00d1), you might want to try agp_try_unsupported=1.
kernel: SubID=0x1458a002.
kernel: PCI: 00:02.2 PCI cache line size set incorrectly (0 bytes) by BIOS/FW.
kernel: PCI: 00:02.2 PCI cache line size corrected to 16.

hi,
cant wait till i get myself one of those athlon 64s.

AFAIK you need the x86_64 kernel to use the 64bit extensions of your cpu. I'd imagine that it would be stable considering it was written to support the opteron for workstations and servers. However you can continue to use the normal kernel if you have problems with the x86_64 kernel, you just dont get to use your 64bit extensions.

Cheers
