ALSA/OSS problems (via82xx driver, alsamixergui, etc.)

Hi there, I'm running Debian Sarge, and I'm having difficulties with my sound card.

I've been fighting with my motherboard's (K7SOM+) onboard soundcard (CMI9738) for ages, and when I finally get it work it starts giving me even stranger errors than before. I can hear sound from XMMS using OSS but when I start up alsamixergui I get the error "alsamizer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device"

How can I fix this? Are there any OSS to alsa guides?

If you are using KDE, you can specify what sound system you want to use in KControl. Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> Sound System. Choose tab named Hardware; then use the Select audio device drop-down menu. Try different options and see which one works. This approach fixed my problems at least
